Creating Opportunities, Achieving Potential

CSR Vision

To create an opportunity for every stakeholder to reach their full potential.

Mission

To facilitate the stakeholders hasten their social, economic and environmental progress through effective management of human and natural capital.

As DBF is getting closer to achieving the goals related to MDGs, it has begun to calibrate the focus on issues which are more material, both to itself and the communities.

One such issue is water. Therefore, it is working both on water harvesting and water usage in neighbouring communities.

The other critical issue is energy conservation. Therefore, it is concentrating on this issue as well and a direct effect is the offsetting of communities’ carbon footprints.

DBF is also focusing on skill development and social growth while it continues to work on MDGs until it achieves the goals in a year or so.

Harvesting and Conserving Water for Productive Use

Land and water support all life on earth. Communities depend on both to carry out daily activities, look after their homes, take care of cattle and livestock and irrigate their fields. Healthy landscapes and water systems are essential for livelihoods, wellbeing of future generations and environment to be secure.

If 97% of the total water available on earth is in oceans and 2% is in glaciers, there is only about 1% of fresh water left for usage. It is, therefore, a challenge and necessity to conserve freshwater.

It is true that many DBF programme locations face a challenge of maintaining the water table at 500 feet below the ground level due to unchecked withdrawal for agricultural purposes. Therefore, the foundation is working both on water harvesting and water usage in neighbouring communities. It is expanding its partnerships with institutions like NABARD to scale-up the programme at various locations and in new geographies. The programme also aims at checking fast soil erosion in its areas.

Ensuring Access to Clean Cooking and Solar Lighting

The challenge concerning energy is an industrial issue and also an issue for the rural population. Whether it is depleting fuelwood resources for cooking or erratic power supply at homes, access to clean energy is a struggle. Coupled with this are health and environmental challenges due to the smoke coming out of millions of wood-burning stoves. Moreover, energy conservation is equally important to mitigate climate changes and their consequences.

Burning fuel remains the principal energy source in rural and traditional sectors, and contributes to a third of India’s energy. Incomplete combustion is one of the main sources of indoor air pollution which is contributing to greenhouse gases.

The foundation addresses these challenges in a multi-pronged fashion. ... Promotion of non-conventional and renewable energy is one of the important pillars of its programme. It also promotes usage of solar home lighting equipment, solar lanterns, solar streetlights and fuel-efficient stoves. Dung based bio-gas plants are also being endorsed. All this has been done to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases and help the nation become a low-carbon area. DBF’s energy conservation initiative is trying to address the need for energy sustainably through the use of renewable resources. Under this initiative, it is working closely with the local community to change mindsets and replace the traditional source of energy with clean energy.

Livelihood Skill Training

Transforming Households and Including Unemployed Youth Into Skilled Workforce for Enhanced Income

While everyone may be proud of the fact that India can soon become the youngest nation in the world with the largest workforce, a challenge of availability of skilled manpower still persists.

96% of the workforce that enters the job market in China is skilled. However, only 5% of the workforce in India is skilled. Thus, the nation has set an ambitious target of training 500 million people by 2022 in varied skills.

Supporting the Government of India in this initiative, Dalmia Bharat Group aims to create more livelihood opportunities through skill development programmes.

Through its foundation programme, it continues to equip people with a new set of skills or upgrades their skills, aiming to enhance their income. With a focus on skills in the construction sector, it also covers other segments, both in the farm and non-farm sectors.
