Environmentally friendly and Sustainable

right-orange

Dalmia Cement’s overarching focus lies in consuming less to manufacture more, while minimising environmental impact. It is its conviction that the most successful, profitable and sustainable companies are ones that hold themselves to the most stringent environmental standards.

Dalmia Cement has been progressively producing cement with ‘greener’ alternatives. It has invested in low-carbon technologies that translate into enhanced resources and energy efficiency. It has also increased the proportion of environment-friendly blended cement in its product mix to 80%, reducing its carbon footprint while addressing waste disposal issues of other industries. The company’s risk mitigation policies were outlined keeping in mind its long-term vision on the one hand and enhanced sustainability-driven prosperity on the other.

Dalmia Cement’s commitment towards environmental protection was reflected in its achievements – It was ranked No.1 in the global cement manufacturing sector by the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) for its achievement in transitioning into a low carbon footprint business. It has increased the proportion of alternative materials used, replacing conventional kiln fuels with alternative fuels and bio-fuels. As a company, it has moderated its emissions in line with the International Energy Agency’s (IEA) 2° scenario mandated for 2030. The company became the first organisation globally, to commit to both RE100 and EP100 campaigns. This commitment was reinforced through various ground-level initiatives across its plants and functions.

Dalmia Cement has created a cumulative water recharge potential of approximately five times of its annual water consumption. Its consolidated freshwater withdrawal has reduced by 38% with water recycling increasing by 4 times. For the company, water positive cement production is the solution to water-related physical risks of climate change.

Dalmia Cement follows the business philosophy of ‘Clean & Green is Profitable and Sustainable’, to create positive environmental and social impacts. By replacing conventional fuels and raw materials with alternative solutions, expanding its overall renewable energy portfolio, blended cement and investment in technology, the company is reducing any adverse impact on the planet.

Dalmia Cement (Bharat) Limited recently announced industry-first transition measures for turning climate change into an opportunity. A proof of its commitment is that it was the only cement company in the world to speak at the Climate Action Summit of UN Secretary-General on 23rd September, 2019.

Today, the company’s carbon footprint is 40% lower than the global average for a cement company, which is the lowest carbon footprint in the global cement sector. Moving from Grey to Green, it is setting up the largest carbon capture facility in the cement sector, globally. Dalmia Cement is committed to becoming carbon negative by 2040.

How Do We Do It?

Road to 2040

right-orange

Dalmia Cement (Bharat) Limited and Carbon Clean Solutions have teamed up to build the cement industry’s largest Carbon Capture Plant.

The carbon capture plant is a large scale facility of 500,000 tonnes per year carbon capture at Tamil Nadu, India. Dalmia Cement signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Carbon Clean Solutions Limited (CCSL) the U.K., a leader in low-cost carbon dioxide separation technology to provide technology and operational services for the plant based on its patented CDRMax Technology.

Currently, small-scale carbon capture plants have been commissioned in few cement plants in China and Europe. However, a large-scale demonstration plant of this capacity has not been planned or announced in the cement industry yet. Dalmia Cement and CCSL will explore multiple utilisation streams for the CO2 that is captured from this large-scale plant, including direct sale for use in other industries, and manufacture of chemicals.

Its dream of becoming carbon negative by 2040 is next on the company’s agenda and it has committed to exploring the following actions –

Fossil Free Electricity Initiative

Fossil Free Electricity Initiative (RE 100)

The Conference of Parties (COP-22) Energy Day on 11th November at Marrakesh in Morocco, witnessed unique development when a core manufacturing sector company, Dalmia Cement (Bharat) Limited, joined RE 100 – an ambitious campaign of leading conglomerates of the world. It was the only one from the global cement sector to commit to a long term transition to renewable energy.

One of the major components of its Green to Greener roadmap is the ‘Fossil Free Electricity Initiative’. The need for the initiative was felt due to two reasons:

● Preparing its operations from futuristic costs of energy-related externalities

● Tapping the saving opportunities for a clean energy transition

Under the initiative, it has identified a 40 MW green power generation potential through waste heat recovery from exit gases in its integrated cement plants. A 10 MW project is under implementation and another project of 9 MW is under final stages of approval. In a significant thrust to renewable electricity generation, Dalmia Bharat Group has commissioned 8 MW captive solar PV projects in its Eastern India operations. Another Solar PV project of 12 MW and various rooftop solar PV projects are under various stages of implementation.

Doubling Energy Productivity (EP 100)

EP 100 is another ambitious campaign that aims to double energy productivity by 2030. Dalmia Cement (Bharat) Limited is the first company from the cement sector that became a signatory to EP 100 and voluntarily committed to doubling energy productivity by 2030.

Water Positivity – Harvesting More Water Than We Consume

Considering the corporate responsibility of living in harmony with local communities by minimising the competing use of water, Dalmia Cement undertook the target to become water positive by 2017. It created various check dams, farm ponds, rehabilitation of village ponds, etc. through Dalmia Bharat Group Foundation for rainwater harvesting and recharging groundwater. Additionally, it reduced the freshwater demand in its cement plants through the use of harvested rainwater in plants and recycled water use. As a result, Dalmia Cement became 12.4 times water positive in FY 2020-21 at a group level. However, since water is a local subject, the company is further driving this target down to the plant level so that each cement plant of Dalmia Bharat Group becomes water positive at a local watershed level within a year.

Environmental and Social Performance

Clean Water And Sanitation

The company is a signatory to the WBCSD WASH Pledge and provides safe water, sanitation and hygiene at the workplace.

Over 10,000 people are drinking clean water taken from community RO plant set-up with its assistance.

Affordable And Clean Energy

Dalmia Bharat Group is one of the former in India to commission a 16.5 MW wind farm in 1993.

It has commissioned solar PV projects and waste heat recovery projects and is working to double energy
productivity by 2030 and is working on additional green energy projects.

Responsible Consumption And Production

The share of industrial waste origin fuels to total fuel mix (in %) has almost doubled from 2014-2017

For a major impact to the circular economy, about 30% of the company’s raw material for cement comes from industrial waste.

Business And Biodiversity

Being an IBBI member it has opted for steps like eco-friendly mining, plantations and water bodies around mines.

Large excavators (6.5 m3) capable of digging semi- hard strata supported by rock breakers are deployed to minimise blasting operations.

By deploying a higher capacity rock breaker, it eliminated secondary blasting operations to minimise adverse impacts like fly rock and noise in the surrounding area.

A clay separation unit/screening plant has been installed for utilisation of subgrade limestone with minimal waste disposal and increase in mineral reserves, further increasing the mine life.

Dalmia Cement has been committed to planting thousands of tree saplings in the topsoil dumping area and in the buffer zone for developing thick greenery in the mine area.

To mitigate the drill emissions, the company has deployed a hydraulic drill machine with inbuilt dust-collecting devices and AC cabin to ensure operator’s safety.

Dalmia Bharat Group has created rainwater harvesting structures across mining areas to recharge the groundwater levels and thus making more water available for local communities.
